Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage is available for both home and auto insurance, but it serves distinct purposes in each policy.

Firstly, let's address auto coverage and PIP. This type of coverage applies to no-fault accidents, covering medical expenses and lost wages for you or your passengers if injured in a car accident. It may also include funeral expenses. Typically, this coverage is mandatory in states with no-fault auto insurance laws, meaning you are responsible for your own losses regardless of fault.

Is PIP coverage for your home the same? Not at all. PIP in the context of home insurance is more akin to personal offense coverage. Personal offense insurance covers incidents such as:

  • Libel and/or slander

  • False arrest, detention, or imprisonment

  • Malicious prosecution

  • Wrongful eviction or entry

  • Associated legal costs

Although the term 'PIP' is used for both types of coverage, they have entirely different meanings. It is important to consult with your insurance agent to understand if these coverages are included in your auto or home policy.
